10 Essential Tips for Making a Living with Your Music

Top 10 Lists are a favorite hobby of our society. It’s a fun way to keep up the illusion of the simplicity of things in a complex world. So...why not a Top Ten List on the subject of Making A Living From Your Music? The following list highlights 10 habits you should develop if you want to make a living some day, just from your music. Remember that there are a million ways to get to any intended destination. From my observations over the years, this list of professional habits are shared my most successful musicians who truly have what it takes to succeed in this totally unpredictable business of music.

1. Find ways to get ordinary people who love music, to love your music.
We live in a time when everybody and their sister can and does make their own music. That doesn’t mean however that your music has what it takes for record labels to invest their money and time developing, promoting, and marketing that music. Try your music out on music fans like you solicit opinions from A&R Rep. These talent scouts of the music business are always following tips they hear from their street connections. But remember, your music must truly stand out in some significant, original, dynamic, and creative way. 95% of the independently produced CDs out there contain regurgitated ideas that were ripped off from some other more gifted musicians. Prove to the industry that ordinary music fans in your city love your music. You can find this out by giving away samples of your music on the street, or outside a musc venue where an artist similar to your music style is playing. (Be sure to have your contact information on the CD or flashdrive or whatever your music is on.) Also, put songs on your website, your MySpace page, or any of the newer social networking sites. The fact is that If people love something they let other people know about it. So, you can find out quickly if your music has what it takes by bringing your music to the people.

2. Play live often and don’t worry (at first) about getting paid for every gig.
You can always tell the difference between a musician who is in it for the money, and a musician who is in it for the music. The dedicated musician can’t not play music every chance they get. Money-focused musicians whine about the fact that they can’t get club gigs that pay anything. If you really think that you can make your living solely as a musician in the first three to four years of your career, you are headed for a breakdown and disappointment. Think about it...almost every legendary, gifted musician who has made a mark on our culture has been a musician who struggled long and hard at their craft, and...never gave up. Eat determination for breakfast! Go out there and play on the streets if you have to, play at schools, fairs, festivals, do benefits to help other people and organizations. Offer your services to non- profits, charities, church groups, and any other companies or organizations you can think of. Hang out at clubs, look for jamming possibilities, or start your own jam sessions. Look around your city or town, and you will see many places and venues where musicians can play. As you establish yourself and more and more people show up at your shows, the paid gigs will increase. Remember... play live, and then after you play live, play live again, that’s what musicians are supposed to do.

3. Know your instrument inside-out.
One of the curious developments of the late 1970’s was the huge increase in garage bands, punk bands, rappers, and ‘do-it yourselfers’, who just picked up an instrument, or started to sing with some friends, and 6 months later recorded a record and began to play live. Some great music, and new directions in music, came out of that situation. But now, 30 odd years later, the novelty of hearing amateurish thrashings has gotten a bit dull.

Prior to late 70’s, more often than not, the music that is our heritage was made by musicians who, from the time they took up their instrument, worshipped at the feet of some master bluesman, jazz player, folk legend, songwriter, or whatever. The habit of these inspired musicians was an appetite for perfection. A need to be not just ‘good enough’, but GREAT. Why settle for less. Whatever developing stage you are at, go beyond it, re-commit yourself to your instrument or voice. Take lessons, or better yet, sit yourself down at your CD player and choose a favorite guitar player’s record, and listen closely to what they are playing. then re-play it, and re-play it again. Challenge yourself to go beyond your limitations. Who knows, maybe you will fall into some new territory, wherein you will find yourself, your ‘sound’, and increase your chance to stand out from all the mediocrity that is your competition. Believe it or not, record labels love to hear innovative, accessible new sounds. Actually in their heart of hearts, that is what they are really hoping to hear on every new demo they get, and from every new act they go see at a live venue. You see...in the business of music, when we hear something new, original, and accessible to people, we can then invest in you with more security, believing that if we put our ‘label brand’ on you, with our talents of promotion and marketing coming to the front, then we ‘have something’, and your music becomes our music, and we work together to broaden you audience appeal. It’s kinda like a partnership ...something about ‘Art and Commerce’...they can work together you know?!

4. Protect your investment...register your songs for proper copyright protection.
I never cease to be amazed how few artists are willing to spend a few bucks to register their songs with the Copyright office. By the way, these folks are often the same folks who complain about not getting paid to perform their unknown music. All I know is that when an inventor comes up with some new product that they think will appeal to a certain type of customer, the first thing they do is file for a patent on their invention. The same reaction to protecting songs should be there for any serious songwriter. If you really intend to work hard and develop your career as a musician who writes your own songs, don’t wait too long to take care of this simple, but essential task. If you really believe in your unique and original music then take the time to learn the basics of copyright protection. From the Internet to the library, there a number of easy ways to learn what it takes to file for copyright protection. Do it now! Go to www.copyright.gov and follow their links on Copyright registration information.

5. Design and write your promotional materials so they stand out.
The topic of designing and writing effective promotional materials; bios, fact sheets, cover letters, quote sheets etc. is a lengthy one to say the least. As far as some tips that can help musicians promote their careers, and contribute to their getting any deal offers, is to make the promo materials as compelling, and informative as possible. Take the time to inventory any accomplishments, positive reviews, training and awards, past sales, and live appearance highlights; and organize them into professional written bios etc. Having done that, time also needs to be taken to research who to send the materials to, and to ask each potential recipient what type of information they would like to have sent to them. No ‘generic’ kits should ever be sent out to any gatekeepers in the music business.

6. Know the labels and music publishers you hope to be signed to.
If you were applying for a job with a certain company of corporation, wouldn’t you take some time to ask questions about their stability as a business, their reputation in the industry, and the executives background and experience? The same is true when shopping for a record deal. Some musicians get so excited when a certain label approaches them with a recording contract, or a publishing company offers to sign them. Being approached for a deal is a compliment and recognition by a label or publisher that a musician’s music is attractive to them. But, to rush ahead without taking the time to learn a few things about them is foolish indeed. How have they done with your particular genre of music? What specific ‘points’ are they offering you? Who runs the label or publishing company? What is their reputation in the music business? How do you like them as people? These and other questions can be crucial in making an unemotional decision about an arrangement that could make or break your career.

7. Have your own ‘Entertainment Law Attorney’ to represent you.
The business of getting signed to any deal in the music business has always had, has now, and will always have, the involvement of entertainment law attorneys. No jokes will be inserted here, because any relationship between a musician, a record label, a publisher, a merchandiser etc. will come down to two attorneys hashing out the contract for the musician and the respective companies. It should be pointed out here that when all is said in done with the ‘courting’ process, the musician is never present during the actual negotiations. The musicians attorney and the music company’s attorney meet, talk over the phone, and fax their offers and counter-offers amongst themselves. This fact serves to remind you that choosing a reputable, ethical, well respected entertainment law attorney is an absolute necessity for any serious musician who wishes to fight the good fight in the legal arena.

8. Choose a well-connected and respected personal manager.
Self-management is always a valid option in the developing stages of establishing your career as a musician. Much can be learned by taking on the jobs of securing gigs, getting some publicity, planning tours, dealing with personal issues that arise within the band, and schmoozing with A&R Reps and various other label and publishing personnel. However, there comes a time, usually when the daily tasks of doing the business of being a band takes up too much time, and it is at this time that the services of a good manager can be very useful. I have always felt that if any musician or band has worked hard to establish their career, and achieved a modicum of success, they will have a better chance to ‘attract’ the services of a professional, well-connected and respected manager.

Managers who do this job for a living can only take on clients that generate income. Making money as a personal manager is no easy task, and many upcoming artists forget that if any moneys are to be generated from their music, it can takes years for the flow of that income to be reliably there. So, as a band develops self-management, or gets help from intern/student manager-wannabees, can help pave the road for professional management.

Over the years I have heard several horror stories about ‘managers’ that approach upcoming acts and say that for X amount of dollars, they can do such and such for the artist. No... this is not the way legit personal managers work. Well-connected and respected personal managers get paid a negotiated fee for their services (get it in writing) for any and all business transactions they are responsible for (15%-20%) over a particular contract period. Please Note...No musicians should ever pay a fee to a so-called ‘manager’ who will not do any work UNLESS they are paid up front. Flim-Flam men and women still abound in this business... be forewarned.

One of the most important jobs of a manager is to secure recording and publishing contracts for their clients, this is why it is so essential to choose well connected and well respected managers. The music business is a ‘relationship’ business. Who know who, and who can get to know who, and who did what successfully for who is what this management game is all about. Choose carefully those people who will be representing you in any business dealings.

9. Don’t take advice from anyone unless you know that they know what they are talking about.
At the beginning of this article I stated that there are a million ways to do something, and that these 10 tips were just my comments from years of dealing with the business itself and musicians. Everybody has their own list of Do’s and Don’ts and the only real value they have is that they present you with ‘opinions’ about what to do to get established as a musician.

To be quite candid, the best rules in the music business comes from the experience of building your own career; learning from your own interactions with the gatekeepers at labels, the media, management, and booking companies as to what is right or wrong for you. For every Do or Don’t there is an exception to a so-called ‘rule’. As I reflect on the advice I sought out and listened to over the years, the most valid tips came from people who walked the walk, and talked the talk. If you feel that the source you have contacted knows what they are talking about, and has had first hand experience doing what you want to learn about, that is the only feedback that might stand up over time. Choose carefully.

10. Musician...Educate Thyself! If you want a record deal, learn what a record deal is, and learn something about the business of music.
Naïve or mis-informed musicians are a menace to themselves. Enough already! Over the decades there have been countless stories of musicians who were ripped off by their record labels and music publishing companies. Why? Exploitation was the name of the game way back when, and regretfully it hasn't gone away. Keeping musicians in the dark can still be standard business practice for many sleave-balls who are in this busienss. However, you can't be a naive artist these days, so any any musician who signs a record contract (and learns later what he or she signed) have only themselves to blame. )

Today there are dozens of outstanding books available on every conceivable topic related to the business of music. They can be found in bookstores, libraries, and through the Internet. In addition, there are many schools that now offer 2- 4 year programs on the business of music. Seminars, and workshops are available on a year round basis in most major American cities. Consultants, Attorneys, and Business Organizations are all around and so it is only myth, superstition, stubbornness, and immaturity that stand in the way of any musician making a commitment to educating themselves about the business that exists to exploit their music.

I cannot stress how important I feel this issue is. Educating yourself is THE most important suggestion I can make to help you have a chance at success.

If you won't learn about the business side of this industry, do you really expect the professionals you encounter to sit down and teach you? Get Real!

Fleet Week May 22nd .

The kids and I had so much fun. I never knew that hanging out with a bunch of sailors could be so much fun. Neither did the kids.

http://rubycollins.com/ What is Fleet Week?:
Since 1984, New York City has held Fleet Week to honor the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The week features extensive military demonstrations, as well as the opportunity for the public to tour some of the visiting ships. The Memorial Day commemoration is a highlight of the week's festivities, featuring the singing of Taps and a military aircraft fly over in honor of those who lost their lives in service to the United States.

I Need to Get Myself Booked

I have to go into the city and start to get my self booked in these local spots since i now have a band and I can hire a couple of pieces and sell my cd as a means of paying them.

My First Day On The Job

It was a little nerve wrecking at first. It did not dawn on me until I got on the train that there will be over a million people in the city and I just can't hand my cd out to every one... and one challenge I did come across is that not everyone was willing to take the cd... even when i said it was for free.

My son Kennedy had a good attitude about it he said, "let's just give it to them mommy if they say NO go to the next person." Pretty brave of him. Already learning that the word "NO" is not the end of the world. Well eventually we gave out a good bit of cd's not the 110 that i brought with me but we made some progress.

I did meet a couple of people where i could sit and sing to them and they were very happy to meet me. Check out the Photos.

I Cried Like A Baby

I have been organizing, cleaning, and decorating the house for my music school. I bought some plaster to cork up the holes around the sink and the bathroom where the roaches come out to have a party and while i was on my knees my baby son who is three years old pat me on my back and said "you can do it mommy." I could not believe what he had said and had to ask him to say it again and when he did i just began balling in tears and said thank you honey. It is as if he could see my heart and the passion that i have for wanting to make a life for him and his brother.

You Could Have Been Famous

My mom was by my house the other day and she said to me you could have been famous if a big record producer was to hear your voice but then you would have been out in the world." As if i had given up on my dream. And of course growing up in church doesn't really motivate you to be famous. That's what i hate about church. You are always living your life for the coming of the lord. Don't get me wrong I love Jesus, but how do you spend your time in this God forsaken place they call life. I would have liked to be famous too or at least get paid for my music. But between my mom and church growing up, I did not pursue it 100% percent because of my church values...I did not sleep with the president of the record company or sleep my way to the top. Looking back.....

Any way I have a new idea...I am going to continue to press my cd's and give it away
Mid Manhattan on 42nd Street. i will press 5000 copies of my cd as promotional cd and my kids and i will go out on 42nd street after school and hand out free promo cds that's the new idea. (^_^)

Some Days Are Better Than Others

I was walking to my car and my neighbor said hey how are you ok? I paused and thought about it for a moment and he said this is the first time i ever see you walk with a drag...usually your are walking with a lot of pep in your step. He's right and he noticed. This economy has not been kind to alot of us and I am constantly thinking of ways to capitalize on my talent.

I received a call today of a 14 year old boy who wants to take guitar lessons. He'll be my second customer. However, I think i charged them way too little. $150. for six weeks 30 min per session. Anyway. I had to get the house in order. The roaches have been trying to take over...Damn pest. They think their family using my plates drinking water from the sink, hanging out in the tub. Disgusting I know..but i have a surprise for them. Well I have got to go. I almost cried when my husband brought home his pay check but i had to keep my cool and know that a better day is coming.

Ever since I told the guy from Germany that my brother was going to be in Europe the same time that he wanted me to come down for the tour .. I have not heard back from him...that's strange or a blessing in disguise.

Good night

Whoopi Goldberg kisses Katy Perry on the lips

Whoopi Goldberg kisses Katy Perry on the lips

Whoopi Goldberg kisses Katy Perry on the lips

PLEASE CHECKOUT THIS VERSION OF "THINKING OF YOU" BY KATE PERRY

"I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf/While jacking off listening to Mozart," Katy Perry tells her metrosexual ex on "Ur So Gay." Risqué words, coming from the daughter of two Christian pastors who only let her listen to gospel tunes as a kid. Now 23, the L.A. singer bucks the WWJD'ers with a debut full of mall-punky, grrrl-power tunes produced by Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette) and Dr. Luke (Avril Lavigne). But her attention-grabbing doesn't feel very rebellious: On the New Wave-y club single "I Kissed a Girl" — a vanilla recounting of her chick-on-chick exploits — she sounds like the type who makes out with her BFF just to get a dude's attention. And when she's not acting out, she's a total snooze. "Mannequin," a lament about a guy who's too stoic ("You're not a man, you're just a mannequin!"), recalls Cher's Eighties catalog. And the acoustic ode "Thinking of You," which compares an unrequited lover to "an Indian summer in the middle of winter," is generic Dawson's Creek schlock. Yes, Perry has a heart, but it sounds like her bustier's too tight for her to use it.

48 hours pass as search continues for 3 missing boaters

Correy Smith
Marquis Cooper (Below)

CLEARWATER, Florida (CNN) -- The search for three missing boaters, including two NFL players, continued throughout the night and into early Tuesday off Florida's Gulf Coast. The search had passed its 48th hour.

With 2,000 square miles of water to search, the hope was the three were still alive despite having been dumped into the sea during a storm.

A fourth boater, former University of South Florida football player Nick Schuyler, had been found clinging to their small overturned fishing boat Monday afternoon. He was found about 39 miles west of Egmont Key, Florida, sitting atop the overturned 21-foot boat with a life jacket on.

Schuyler told his Coast Guard rescuers that their boat was anchored Saturday evening when it was overturned by waves, said Capt. Timothy M. Close, Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg command

Schuyler told them that all four men clung to the boat for a time, but became separated, Close said.

Still missing early Tuesday were Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper and NFL free agent Corey Smith, who played for the Detroit Lions for the past three seasons. Also missing was William Bleakley, a former University of South Florida football player.

Based on what Schuyler told the Coast Guard, they were able to narrow the search from 16,000 square miles.

Schuyler last saw his three friends at 2 a.m. Monday, his father told CNN affiliate WTSP in Tampa on Monday afternoon. The three were wearing life vests.

Early Tuesday, the Coast Guard search involved three cutters and an aircraft, said Petty Officer Sondra-Kay Kneen of the Coast Guard. By daybreak, search craft were to be switched out and were to include two helicopters, she said.

The four boaters had embarked in the single-engine boat from the Seminole Boat Ramp near Clearwater Pass about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the Coast Guard said.

The search was launched early Sunday after friends and relatives realized they had not returned from fishing.

On Monday afternoon, Schuyler appeared to be conscious and talking in video showing him being removed from a Coast Guard helicopter.

While he was initially able to answer a few questions to help with the search, officials decided to wait until he was treated for hypothermia before talking with him again, Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Simpson said. On Monday evening, Schuyler was in serious condition at Tampa General Hospital.

Cooper was aware of Sunday's weather forecast and for that reason picked Saturday for the trip, his wife, Rebekah, told WTSP on Sunday afternoon.

"Fishing is his first love, it always has been," she said, adding, "I have a lot of faith in him out there." Smith and Cooper were teammates with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for part of the 2004 season, when Cooper was a rookie, according to the NFL's Web site.

Jennifer Hudson Finds Performing Therapeutic

Jennifer Hudson Finds Performing Therapeutic

Jennifer Hudson is doing okay.

The American Idol alum - who was left devastated by the murders of her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew in October 2008 - told Oprah Winfrey that performing is "like therapy" during an appearance on Friday's live episode of of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

"I'm good. I'm really good. Glad to be back to working and doing what I love to do. I'm in a very good place," Hudson said, although she didn't make a direct reference to the slayings.

Oscar-winning Hudson - who recently sang at the Super Bowl - added that she has found a good place for her numerous awards: her piano room.

Rihanna Seeks Solace in Mexico

Rihanna Seeks Solace in Mexico

Rihanna is on holiday in Mexico.

The singer, 21 - who was allegedly assaulted by boyfriend Chris Brown earlier this month and left with two "huge contusions" on both sides of her forehead, a bloody lip and bloody nose following the altercation - was spotted soaking up the sun a day after her 21st birthday.

The New York Daily News reports, "The shocking bruises that sources say boyfriend Chris Brown left on the songbird's face just before the Grammy Awards were not visible.

"Nor was she smiling.

"Her grim expression, so at odds with the balmy setting, hinted at the heartbreak the Umbrella singer has endured since her private agony became public knowledge.

"Then, with a couple of close friends, Rihanna decamped for a private beachside villa in Punta Mita."

Meanwhile, Rihanna - who recently celebrated her 21st birthday and is currently on holiday in Mexico - is said to be "deeply traumatized" by the current situation.

The source added, "She's devastated all this has become so public.

"She's just angry and extremely humiliated that the whole world knows how much pain she's in right now.

Rhianna's Reluctant To File Charges and Chris Brown is Pleading Self Defense

Rhianna's Reluctant To File Charges and Chris Brown is Pleading Self Defense

Bossip reported some time ago that Rihanna initiated the fight. Now it looks like Chris Brown and his team have come up with a reason as to why he beat the living dog sh*t out of Rihanna; self defense:

A source tells Life & Style magazine, “Chris is already building his case. “He’s saying she threw a phone at him, then hit him in the head and basically just lost it. He’s saying she attacked him.” Darren Kavinoky, a criminal defense attorney in LA, said of Brown’s defense: “Unless there’s some indication that she was enraged to the point that she physically threatened him, I think he’d have a tough time with that defense. “If it goes to court, ultimately it would be up to a jury to decide.

A celly across the dome is the reason you beat her like she stole something? SMH

To help out the Chris Brown defense, Rihanna, still has not filed charges:

Rihanna is reluctant to press charges over her alleged beating at the hands of ex boyfriend Chris Brown, according to U.S. reports. Brown was arrested and charged with making criminal threats following an alleged attack on the Umbrella hitmaker after a pre-Grammys party on 8 February (09). He was freed on bail following the incident. He is due in court in Los Angeles on 5 March (09) for an arraignment hearing. Police are still gathering evidence on the case but Rihanna has so far not come forward to press charges against her ex lover, according to In Touch magazine. A spokesman for Los Angeles district attorney’s office tells the publication, “We do not have enough evidence and there have been no charges filed on the Chris Brown case.” But the spokesman is adamant they will seek justice - even if Rihanna doesn’t appear in court to testify. The spokesman adds, “If the state gathers up enough evidence, we will press charges with or without her testifying. It is not up to the victim. She will not have to show up during the arraignment.

The D.A. does not need Rihanna to testify, but it sure does hurt the case to know she is not cooperating. Despite the tat’s on Chris, he is a first time offender and depending on the severity of her wounds, might not get any time.

Jill Scott Confirms She is Pregnant

Jill Scott Confirms She is Pregnant

Jill Scott confirmed she is pregnant by her fiancee:

Jill Scott is pregnant with her first child, the R&B singer and actress revealed to reporters at the Television Critics Association conference in Los Angeles on Friday.

Promoting her new HBO series The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, based on the popular novels by Alexander McCall Smith, Scott said she discovered that she was pregnant just before leaving for Botswana where she filmed the show. “The first trimester I spent in Botswana,” said the star, who is due April 25. “That was one of the biggest challenges of my life. First trimester! You’re sick every morning. It was seven hours time difference, the heat, the bugs, the 14 hour days.” Still, the actress, who is engaged to drummer Lil’ John Roberts, says she’s glad she went through with the plans to film. “My doctors gave me a clean bill of health and said you can do this, so I did it.”

Scott, 36, is a three-time Grammy Award winner and star of the 2007 Tyler Perry film Why Did I Get Married?

RiRi’s Knocked Up??

Rihanna was hiding a shocking secret when Chris Brown brutally beat her. In the March 9 issue of Star — on sale now — we exclusively report that days before the terrifying incident, Rihanna consulted an ob-gyn at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after confiding to close friends that she suspected she was pregnant with Chris’ baby.

Wearing sunglasses and dressed in all black, she appeared nervous and upset. “She was extremely fidgety. She seemed totally uncomfortable,” an eyewitness at the doctor’s office tells Star. With their relationship already on rocky ground, Rihanna feared a pregnancy could be the last straw and Chris might dump her.

“She was scared he would react badly,” says an insider. But Rihanna did not get the chance to tell her boyfriend of a year about her trip to the doctor. Before she got a chance to say anything, Chris beat her black and blue after she tried to grab his cellphone to read a text message he had just received.

Solange Knowles -- Laid Out!Beyonce's little sister has fallen and she can't get up!

Solange Knowles was hospitalized last week for dehydration and low blood pressure -- and these pictures were snapped as she lay passed out on the ground. Knowles went on to Twitter about how she thinks she took too much Nyquil and woke up surrounded by random people.

No word if this was a part of Etta James' revenge plot.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden's Plan for a healthy America

Plan for a Healthy America

Barack Obama and Joe Biden's Plan

The plan I found is called ( I- Can- Benefit) http://www.icanbenefit.com/

On health care reform, the American people are too often offered two extremes - government-run health care with higher taxes or letting the insurance companies operate without rules. Barack Obama and Joe Biden believe both of these extremes are wrong, and that’s why they’ve proposed a plan that strengthens employer coverage, makes insurance companies accountable and ensures patient choice of doctor and care without government interference.

The Obama-Biden plan provides affordable, accessible health care for all Americans, builds on the existing health care system, and uses existing providers, doctors and plans to implement the plan. Under the Obama-Biden plan, patients will be able to make health care decisions with their doctors, instead of being blocked by insurance company bureaucrats.

Under the plan, if you like your current health insurance, nothing changes, except your costs will go down by as much as $2,500 per year.

If you don’t have health insurance, you will have a choice of new, affordable health insurance options.

Make Health Insurance Work for People and Businesses - Not Just Insurance and Drug Companies.

  • Require insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions so all Americans regardless of their health status or history can get comprehensive benefits at fair and stable premiums.
  • Create a new Small Business Health Tax Credit to help small businesses provide affordable health insurance to their employees.
  • Lower costs for businesses by covering a portion of the catastrophic health costs they pay in return for lower premiums for employees.
  • Prevent insurers from overcharging doctors for their malpractice insurance and invest in proven strategies to reduce preventable medical errors.
  • Make employer contributions more fair by requiring large employers that do not offer coverage or make a meaningful contribution to the cost of quality health coverage for their employees to contribute a percentage of payroll toward the costs of their employees health care.
  • Establish a National Health Insurance Exchange with a range of private insurance options as well as a new public plan based on benefits available to members of Congress that will allow individuals and small businesses to buy affordable health coverage.
  • Ensure everyone who needs it will receive a tax credit for their premiums.

Reduce Costs and Save a Typical American Family up to $2,500 as reforms phase in:

  • Lower drug costs by allowing the importation of safe medicines from other developed countries, increasing the use of generic drugs in public programs and taking on drug companies that block cheaper generic medicines from the market
  • Require hospitals to collect and report health care cost and quality data
  • Reduce the costs of catastrophic illnesses for employers and their employees.
  • Reform the insurance market to increase competition by taking on anticompetitive activity that drives up prices without improving quality of care.

The Obama-Biden plan will promote public health. It will require coverage of preventive services, including cancer screenings, and increase state and local preparedness for terrorist attacks and natural disasters.

A Commitment to Fiscal Responsibility: Barack Obama will pay for his $50 - $65 billion health care reform effort by rolling back the Bush tax cuts for Americans earning more than $250,000 per year and retaining the estate tax at its 2009 level.

Pondering the Rihanna Abuse Photo

riface

The Rihanna post-assault photo is out and it is not pretty. TMZ posted it last night, probably after buying it from someone in the LAPD. While investigators look into the gruesome shot's leak, we've got some questions of our own.

We suppose we've first got to ask if publishing this picture at all is ethical. We say yes. It's unfortunate that the photo will be a source of embarrassment for Rihanna for years to come, but we're glad the image was published for the same reason we're glad the government is rethinking its ban on photographers snapping the coffins returning from Iraq. Rihanna will heal and continue her rise to fame. In the meantime, the more people see the real ugly side of misogyny, the more likely they'll be to stop subjugating and demeaning the women of the world. It doesn't take Annie Leibovitz to see the correlation between Vietnam being the first heavily photographed war and its unpopularity in America.

Problem is we doubt TMZ was thinking anything about women's rights when it started shopping around its bribe. The depths to which Levin et al will sink is almost geologically impossible, and yet they continue the descent. That somebody in the police department risked his career for such an organization leads us to believe the payoff was hefty, large enough to sustain him for a while were he found out and fired—which may be foregone conclusion considering he's being hunted by detectives trained in one of the top police forces in the world.

As for Chris Brown, say goodbye to him. Brown had a violent upbringing and is still clearly traumatized, but the American public is notoriously unforgiving of wife-beaters. Consider Ike Turner, whose career plummeted after Tina went public with his abuse—and Ike was both more talented than Brown and never burdened with photos of his handiwork. This image of Rihanna, of Brown's brutality, won't soon be washed from the minds of his tween fans, or their allowance-giving parents. And sadly, after the troubled young man's career is stripped away, likelier than a comeback is a spiral into substance abuse or worse: a life as a born-again televangelist

Signs of an Emotional Affair

Signs of an Emotional Affair

By Mary Kearl

Everyone seems abuzz about this new breed of affair -- the emotional variety -- from Angie and Brad's much-debated on- and off-screen chemistry during Brad's marriage to Jennifer Aniston, to Madge and A-Rod's current headline-stealing "special friendship." Or maybe this sex-free extramarital intimacy affects a relationship more dear to your heart -- your own. Just what is it? Is it just a strong friendship? Does it lead to sex? Divorce? We discuss these and other intimate details with Ronald T. Potter-Effron, Ph.D., M.S.W. and co-author of "The Emotional Affair."

it's not always easy being a committed relationship...sometimes we forget...

JOHN MAYER'S ANISTON PROPOSAL PLAN

John Mayer has announced plans to propose to girlfriend Jennifer Aniston.

The "Gravity" singer - who briefly split from the "Friends" actress last year after she became annoyed with him speaking publicly about their relationship - took to his Twitter blog over the weekend to confirm his intentions.

On Friday (January 30, 2009), John, 31, wrote: "Visiting the Diamond Exchange in Tustin."

He then followed the comment up on Saturday (January 31, 2009) with: "Welding an engagement ring for my girlfriend."

Although the musician has not confirmed whether the comments were tongue in cheek, they are believed to be a nod towards recent reports he will propose on Jennifer's 40th birthday later this month with a custom-made engagement ring.

A source has previously said: "Money's no object for John. He didn't want to buy something that anyone else had, so he sketched it and is having it custom-made."

Last week, it was reported John had been seen canoodling with a mystery blonde, but the couple silenced critics by spending Sunday (February 1, 2009) together with friends just outside Los Angeles.

A source said: "She and John were affectionate and shared some hugs during the game."

"They acted like a normal couple spending a casual Sunday together with friends."

I wanna show you something.....

“The way to learn to do things is to do things. The way to learn a trade is to work at it. Success teaches how to succeed. Begin with the determination to succeed, and the work is half done already.”
